Picnic Ants

Picnic Ants

It isn’t a picnic without ants and these cute visitors will be a fun addition to your summer gathering.

Instructions

Step 1
Download/print the PDF for the project patterns. If you are using a clear pegboard, slide the actual-size pattern underneath it. Place your beads, following the patterns.

Step 2
You will also need:
Chenille stems, black, 12" length, 2 for each ant
Wiggly eyes, 12mm, 2 for each ant
Craft glue

Step 3
Ask an adult to fuse your designs. Place your pegboard on a flat, heat-safe surface. Set a household iron to the medium setting. Place ironing paper over the pegboard and bead design. In a circular motion, begin to iron the design. When ironed properly, the beads will still have open centers. Let the design cool.

Step 4
Remove the paper and bead design from the pegboard. Flip the design over to expose the non-fused side. Repeat the fusing. Let cool completely. Once the design is cool, peel off the ironing paper. Your pegboard and ironing paper are reusable. Note: Beads need heat for about 10-20 seconds per side to fuse evenly. Lift the paper occasionally to see how the beads are fusing. Additional heating time may be required.

Step 5
Use glue to attach the middle and top layers to the bottom layer of the ant.

Step 6
Attach the wiggly eyes with a small dab of glue.

Step 7
Cut three 5" lengths from the chenille stems. Starting from the top side of the bottom layer, slide one stem piece down through a bead hole as indicated by a red x on the pattern, go across the bottom of the body, and bring the end back up through the hole on the opposite side. Repeat at the other xŐs to add the other two sets of legs. Bend the legs downward. Create a foot on each leg by turning the end of the stem piece upward.

Step 8
Cut one 4" length from a chenille stem for the antennae. Attach the stem piece to the ant in the same way as the legs. Bend the antennae upward and curl the ends downward and slightly forward.
