You will also need:
Embroidery thread
Needle
Cotton ball or swabs
Glue
Four 6 inch pieces of clear twist tie
Small scrap of paper
Step 2
Download the PDF for the Pirate Ship and Treasure Chest Project Pattern. You will use the large square pegboard to create your projects. If you are using a clear pegboard, slide the actual-size pattern underneath it. Place your beads following the pattern.
Step 3
Ask an adult to fuse your designs. Place your pegboard on a flat, heat-safe surface. Set a household iron to the medium setting. Place ironing paper over the pegboard. In a circular motion, begin to iron the project. When ironed properly, the beads will still have open centers. DO NOT OVER-IRON as this will cause the beads to close and can make assembly of your project more challenging. Let the design cool.
Step 4
Remove the paper and bead design from the pegboard. Flip the design over to expose the non-fused side. Repeat the fusing. Let cool completely. Once the design is cool, peel off the ironing paper. Your pegboards and ironing paper are reusable.
Note: Beads need heat for about 10-20 seconds per side to fuse evenly. Lift the paper occasionally to see how the beads are fusing. Additional heating time may be required.
Step 5
SHIP ASSEMBLY: This diagram shows where each lettered piece is inserted into the base.
Step 6
This 3-D diagram shows the right side of the ship assembly. The left side assembles in the same manner. Hint: To make the pegs easier to fit into their slots, insert them while the part is still slightly warm, but not hot, from the ironing.
Step 7
For extra detail, use a needle and embroidery thread to add some rigging lines. Fold the Jolly Roger in half, wrap it around the rear piece of rigging, and glue in place. Glue the pennant to the top of the mast and add some bends to it so it looks like it's blowing in the wind.Lastly, use some cotton from a ball or swabs to create cannon smoke.
Step 8
TREASURE CHEST ASSEMBLY: Snap together the four sides and bottom panel of your treasure chest.
Step 9
Organize your lid segments as shown here, making sure the four hinge beads are all on the same side of the lid.
Step 10
To hold the lid segments together, carefully push twist ties through the bead holes as shown. Once through, simply crimp the twist tie ends to hold the lid tightly together.
Step 11
Attach the lid to the box using two short strands of twist tie.
Step 12
Add the side handles and key to your treasure chest.
Step 13
Create Perler coins by ironing an assortment of beads into flat disks. Add the Perler skulls. For added detail, we curled a small piece of paper into a scroll for a treasure map.
