Shake, Shake, Shake Maracas

Shake, Shake, Shake Maracas

When you make these festive maracas, you will put beads inside so they actually make noise when you shake them. What a fun way to celebrate Cinco de Mayo! Designed By Karen Benvenuti.

Step 2
Download the PDF for the Shake Shake Shake Maracas Project Pattern. You will use the small circle and large square pegboards for your project. If you are using a clear pegboard, slide the actual-size pattern underneath it. Place your beads ON THE PEGS of the pegboard for the circles. For the handles, you should place the rods BETWEEN THE PEGS as indicated. Place the beads for the project.

Step 3
Ask an adult to fuse your designs. For the circles, place your pegboard on a flat, heat-safe surface. Set a household iron to the medium setting. Place ironing paper over the pegboard. In a circular motion, begin to iron the project. When ironed properly, the beads will still have open centers.

Step 4
Let the design cool. Remove the paper and bead design from the pegboard. Flip the design over to expose the non-fused side. Repeat step two. Let cool completely. Once the design is cool, peel off the ironing paper. Your pegboard and ironing paper are reusable.

Note: Beads need heat for about 10-20 seconds per side to fuse evenly. Lift the paper occasionally to see how the beads are fusing. Additional heating time may be required.

Step 5
For the handles, please follow step 2 above, then remove the paper. While the rods are still warm, bend each piece in half lengthwise to form a stick. Ask an adult to hot glue the halves together on each stick.

Step 6
ASSEMBLY: Ask an adult to use the hot glue. Referring to the photo, start with your smallest white disk and hot glue the medium white disk on top of it, then the largest white disk. Continue with a red disk, a yellow disk and a green disk. Now reverse the order and work the sizes backward stopping at the yellow disk. Add 15-20 loose beads inside your maraca. Continue gluing the rest of your disks.

Step 7
Glue your stick to the bottom of your maraca. Tie a ribbon at the base and add a pompom to finish. Shake, shake, shake!
